The offline synchronization feature of “My Documents” is often enabled for client devices, especially for laptops. That could lead to problems if you use Windows 7 / Windows Server 2008 R2 as the OS.

If you enable the explorer option to launch every folder window in a separate process and the device is offline the Explorer.exe process will crash with the message “Server Execution failed”. The complete scenario description:

  • You select the Launch folder windows in a separate process option for Windows Explorer on a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2.
  • You redirect the My Documents folder to an unavailable network location.
  • You try to use a common Windows Explorer-dependent method. For example, you try to start Explorer.exe or to start Control Panel.
